Default 'puter problems... help!!!

Ok so I got a Asus A7S333 with an Athlon XP 2100+ processor. Its got 128 MB of DDR 2100 RAM.

Now if you hate Athlons and AMDs and can't do anything but talk sh*t then... :madfawk: you're opinion isn't needed here.

I decided to install Win 2k, but the first time I did it the thing worked until I was actually in Windows. It kept freezing and so I thought it could be one of two things...

Hardware incompatibility
Windows is hosed

So I unplugged all but my bare essentials and thats when the whole thing just died. So I did a LLF and got rid of Win 2k. Tried reinstalling and it gave me the Netdetect failed error... ie my boot disks were bad.

Got new boot disks and reinstalled. Now it works but the screen keeps going to sleep and never coming back.

Anyone got ideas on what the problem could be. I am going to try the bare essentials again and see what it does. I am thinking its a Win 2k problem and my cd is corrupted, but I am not too sure.

Thanks in advance.

I may not care for AMD.... but that sounds like either, like you said, 2k cd is hosed or possibly something with the motherboard.

Are they all new parts or are you reusing anything? RAM? Vid Card? HDD? CDROM?

I ask, cause if you pulled the cdrom from a working pc and now it's not working (for example) then it would probably be the motherboard. If it's a new cdrom, how do you really know it works right? know what I mean though?

yea so AMD can kiss my ass... :chuckles: but I don't think that's where your problem is...I don't think it matters amd or intel at this point. I think it's either 2k or hardware, specifically maybe the motherboard.

Have you tried XP on there? I had a machine once that wouldn't take 2k pro or 2k server for anything... XP fell into it like it was born there. PC still is working fine.

CD RW is old... its worked for years
DVD drive is new... it also works
HD is new... it also works

I think mobo is ok because I can do stuff in MS Dos and the damn thing doesn't crash. But it hates Windows, maybe its a hint that I need to get Redhat asap.

Do you have at least 4 screws holding in the hard drive?!??!

back when ATX first came out... some friends and I were joking that the next standard wouldn't let you POST if you didn't have at least 4 screws in the HDD, CDROM and Floppy. :chuckles:
