^^^^^ go to local ski/board shop ask for a "heel cup" cut to fit, if you need more than that put in a foot bed

boots are priority number one when buying your own setup
if you want to dump $$$ then go get fitted and then buy online new
i would look used first though, lots of people get 2-3 uses in and decide they dont like boarding and sling their $$$ boots for cheap on CL, as long as the boots arent packed in for their foot shape yet they are good to go if they fit well
laces>* for control, but other styles are decent these days, invest in extra laces though, you will break them a lot

dont know shit about boards, but i would go used for sure, people unload their beat up intermediate stuff to upgrade all the time, and a little ptex and epoxy makes them brand new with a basegrind

I still ride my first gen El Dorado which is a reg cut directional twin tip, I can cut hard toe lines the same as a hard heel line with no issues at all wearing a 13 boot. You do have to make sure you don't favor an edge during binding mount though or you will know it quickly.
Some boards are more mid-wides than reg width too, so it depends on the board he gets. I'd still go with a wide board to be safe, especially if you purchase online.

Boa boots...meh. Laces ftw. My Rome boots also have a lace system (fixed, not tied...just pull on it) for the insole to tighten that individually.

well the Airwalk Freerides came with a strap system on them already but I modified mine a but and added a buckle to it. So it velcors closed and comfortably tight then I latch the ratchet (more like a drop latch) and it locks me in good without cutting any circulation. I have been using these boots for quite a while (9 years or more) and I haven't found a pair to replace them yet, little more shoe goo and they are good for another season.

I'm a big fan of solomon boots. Maybe not the most comfortable in the world, but very durable. I've been rocking my malamutes for about a decade... they look beat up, but functionally, they're as good as they day I bought them, if not better.

+1 on the Salomons!!!

I'm on my second pair of Salomon Dialogues.

They're actually the most comfortable out of all the boots that I've tried. Maybe because I have wide feet... :/
