Default Computer Guys- S3 Power Saving help

Ok, so check this out, hopefully you guys can help. I have a new PC I built a while ago that i'm going to use as a file server. When it's not in use I want it to go into S3 Suspend mode. I have the portion working correctly. When I press the power button the computer goes to sleep and doesn't wake up until I try to access a network resource. But, here's the issue. I have the current power settings set at 5 minutes before it goes into sleep mode (Windows 7 Ultimate). I have the monitor set at 7 minutes. When I test it out, the PC never goes to sleep. The monitor goes out but not the PC. But if I press the power button, the PC goes to sleep. No activity is going to it that would keep it awake.

Any suggestions. It works manually but not automatically like I want it to.

So, what settings are you using to make it wake on access? maybe some network traffic or other program is causing it to stay awake

I just ordered a buttload of atom hardware to make a NAS using freenas and I'm going to attempt the same thing. I know that freenas has a powerdaemon control that can lower power usage if you were interested

I basically have the settings so that network activity directed at it's specific IP Address will cause it to stay awake or keep it up. But it's weird, if i leave it be, it won't sleep, but I can press the power button and it'll go to sleep and stay there until I try to access a resource it's hosting.

For example, I manually put it into sleep, waited 5 minutes then launched iTunes on my macbook. The PC instantly woke up. I then shut down iTunes and Closed my macbook, waited 10 minutes and the PC never went to sleep. I then manually put it to sleep and it stayed asleep. I can't figure out why it won't do it auto.

More details on your atom build sherwood.

2 Cheap 10/100 cards

Cheap KVM Switch

I already have a pair of 1GB DDR2-533 from my old computer as well as a ~350GB HDD so I'm going to be building two server boxes

Does a pretty good job of going over FreeNAS- Watch the whole thing, there's some pretty kick ass options he goes over (like Bit Torrent)

Overall I'm hoping that the atom will be enough to serve up iTunes, uPnP/DLNA, FTP, windows server and do print spooling. My understanding is for my limited use it should work flawlessly, well short of having to chop in the print spooler.

I'm also making one into an untangle box to scan for viruses and allow me network access outside my home with OpenVPN, though I'm not sure that 3.5" HDD will fit with both of those network cards.

:edit:
just to hit on the power daemon thing for a minute, from what I understand if you run it your processor speed will be scaled just like a laptop running on battery. If freeNAS is only using 2% CPU then it'll stay on but be dropped to near-nil speeds to lower the power. This I'm not so sure about yet though :dunno:

apparently this problem is known to happen in vista jae, maybe windows 7 too, is your computer set to "high performance" in power options?
