Grey area. Like a car, the iPhone is your personal possession. What you do with it is your business and your right as an owner.
There is absolutely no illegalities to running Redsn0w because 99% of what you can do is completely legal (run multiple apps, change look / feel, etc). The cracked app part is illegal.

Noob to jailbreaking...do different jailbreaks have different features? Like one allows multiple apps at once, and one doesn't?

I know that. And it allows for more customization. But if I'm going to jailbreak, I want to make sure I can run multiple apps.
