Have you thought about getting something like a Subaru Outback? Looks way better than those SUV crap boxes, will blow out of a snow bank, has plenty of room, rides more like a car than a truck....or Volvo Cross Country etc.

My mom drives a 03 Mazda Tribute which is basically the same as the escape. Gets about 16MPG in town, drives nice, has the 3.0 V6, acceleration is only really good between 30-45. Overall I like the car. __________________

If you don't need the room, you could just get an impreza 2.5i/rs/st (even cheaper than the outbacks) and throw on the struts from an outback or forester for ground clearance. Cheap, car-ish, better mileage, looks cooler than a "cute-ute"

Or just get one of these:

wait... are you suggesting Subaru? cause the prices of the Impreza are pretty good. I'm just not sure about the high... I keep looking for them around here but its less popular then i thought. That could make it a +1

I'm surprised with the prices. 02-03 are like 6-7K

I dunno, my parents got a 2003 Jeep Liberty for about $9500 (48k miles) two years back. On paper, it's not supposed to be the best choice, but the damn thing has been real bulletproof for them (80k now), no issues whatsoever. Also, it's been yanking around a 3200lb (loaded) boat without trailer brakes on a weekly basis (not when there's snow) for 2 years.

4WD is kick-ass in the snow, and gas milage isn't super terrible, about 22mpg on the highway, 16/17 around town. And about 15mpg on the highway towing the boat.

It's also pretty damn compact. The thing is shorter than my 94 Accord, and maneuvers very well.

They can be had for very cheap. My Dad was initially looking at the Escape, but I really doubted it's towing capability. But, our old towmobile was a 95 Ford Aerostar AWD... so pretty much anything would be an upgrade at that point.
