Default bike lock woes

so a friend of mine locked his roof rack to a post outside his apt with a u-lock, then he finished his phd and moved to nebraska
now its sitting outside his old apt locked to the post with a kryptonite knock off brand u-lock

the key to this lock is packed up in his shit at his parents house 3 hours away from me

the rack includes some parts that i want, so i told him i would try to get it off and junk whats leftover for him

ideas?

gf's dad just bought a huge set of bolt cutters apparently, but still 3+ hours away
pulling with truck would tear down the apt complex, although would be most fun
hammer to what part of lock? try to punch out the lock, or try to leverage it open?

i dont know how much space you have, but if you hold the lock so the loop part is point upwards, wack the part thats sticking out where you put the key in.

Code:
         ------
        | |
        | | |- wack here
        | | v
        ============    <--- key hole

also you can try

did it break the casing around the lock, or bend the U shape and allow it to pop out?

leverage techniques will be tried after a short effort with a bic pen

If it has one of those circular keys, take the bottom cap off of a pen, and use it to open the lock.

On the locks that are made crappy it works.

I would take a 5lb mini sledge and wail away. The locking mechanism isn't designed to withstand that much abuse.

from my experience (limited) and what i have read its kind of a myth
some people can get it to work at home with the lock sitting on their desk, but nobody can really make it work consistently on an actual locked up bike

i tried to do it to my old kryptonite back when it just became an issue and i couldnt get it to work, but its a knock off so who knows, maybe i will get lucky
