The original is a gross over generalization. it depends what gear, what bike, and what speed.

You can "quick shift" if you know when the speed and the gear mesh. it has nothing to do with a specific RPM.

You can "quick shift" at 2k if you are going into 5th at 40mph.

It's just knowing your bike. telling someone that their is a "sweet RPM for it" is just wrong.

Unless of course you rebuild motorcycle transmissions, then... nice work.

I wasn't generalizing. I was just explaining to her that it is possible to shift without using the clutch and that it just makes more sense to do so at a higher RPM. I rode her bike and was just giving her an approximate RPM for what can be considered "higher RPM" for that particular bike. You guys are just over analyzing this waaaay too much.

why the hell would you shift without the clutch? last time i checked doing that in a car is not good for the car....

Kinda worries me that she's riding if she doesn't even understand the RPMs........ At least she got a 250 and wasn't like an old friend of mine who got a 1000cc for his first bike

I know nothing about bikes and don't really have any desire to learn anything

couldnt you have just explained to her that the "7" on the RPM meter means "7000" rpm ?
