Quick apple-related question...

I've got a 15" PowerBook G4, 1.67, 1GB, 80GB HD. Running 10.4.

I left the thing plugged-in on the living room couch before I went to work one day, and when I came back, it was on the floor and the power cord was bent. The plug on the cord (kind of looks like an RCA connector) is all bent, and the port has a slight tilt to it. Looks like it slipped off the couch and fell right on the plug.

Anyways, with the cord / port bent, the power connection is pretty intermittent. When I move the computer, it'll lose the power, and I have to mess with it until it works. I'm basically kind of worried that this constant, intermittent connection is having negative effects on my computer.

Basically, is there any risk of this causing serious issues? The port is fine - when I use a non-bent charger, it charges perfectly. I've just recently noticed that my computer has been shutting down when the power status says there's 15min left - i.e., hasn't given me the 10min warning. I have a newer battery, so it's not that (my older, run-down battery will do that, but that's to be expected).
It's affecting your battery calibration. Mac OS keeps track of the high and low charge amperage so it knows how to predict remaining time. More info can be found HERE.

What you need to do is unplug the power adapter from the wall, get a set of fine needle-nose pliers and straighten that shit out until it makes good contact. If you break it, new power adapter time, problem solved. If you're careful and don't break it, then the problem is solved for $0.

Don't worry if the port's a little bent. Mine is too. I had to squish my power adapter back into shape as well. I have the same laptop in a 17" and it's actually my favorite.

:chuckles: @ wind tunnel. Loud ass machines. I think the dual was a mirrored doors. I might have gotten it wrong about being a Quicksilver. I also had a 1ghz Quicksilver. That was loud, too. lol. I tried changing the fans, but realized the one in the power supply was the loud one. o:

Damn good idea about writing to an external. That should keep temps down for sure!!!! :hi5:

Cool man, thanks alot. I've actually brought it in about the battery calibration... i'll read the link. I'll hit it with some pliers, let you know how it goes.

Oh good lord. If you had the early mirror-door, that was the loudest Mac ever made. The "recall" is actually just a firmware update, and I think you can download it if you still have the machine around. It wasn't a hardware problem at all. The firmware they shipped with didn't support the processor temp sensor/fan switch. That was new tech then.

The external drive will encode slow as dirt since it will be reading/writing out of the same I/O at slower-than-SATA speeds... but it's a good test anyway...

... and you won't have to bring your porn to work. :P

I gave that machine to my friend who didn't have a computer. He got my G4 400 which was upgraded to 1ghz processor, then I gave him the mirrored doors machine. Next time I go over there I'm gonna check on that firmware update. I could have sworn that apple did a recall on the power supply.

FI get hooked up with machines from work, so I pay it forward by giving machines way to friends that either have no Mac, or a dead slow one.

I do the same thing! 'guy that helped me build 2 cars has my old PowerBook. That thing cost me $3000 back in '04. He had 2 kids and no money... and thanks to a worm, he had no more computer. The people I've gifted... their families usually like them so much that they all buy Macs once they can.

But now that I've talked about it, I've un-did the good deed.
