Is towing a car a good idea?
i suppose theoldman should know if anyone should.....
I've been thinking about this a lot lately too. The thing is the car dolly is so much less to rent and in my case to buy, than a full trailer. There's ways around the sway issues and such but i have to admit i'm also hesitant to drag my car around over all the bumps and humps one encounters on the freeways. Depending on the state... Some stretches of interstate are just plain rough!

All four wheels = good to go. The kind with the front two wheels is OK for around town and short trips (with FWD car), but definitely not for long hauls. I towed my civic just a few miles with one of the two-wheel ones and it sucked.
Lol, random thoughts?
So are you saying something like 100 miles wouldn't be too bad but 500 would suck?

I've moved 3 times with a Uhaul trailer in the back. Nothing wrong with it. If anything you're reducing wear/tear on your vehicle
I think also if you plan on towing you'll have to upgrade to a little bit larger truck as well.

I think even 100 miles would suck. You realize the car dolly (2 wheel) has NO suspension, right? It's literally just a metal frame with wheels. It bounces and weaves quite a lot. I just moved my car in town with it, and that's about all I would do with the car dolly.

No leaf springs on them? I could of sworn they had em..
No wonder when I see those things being hauled they bounce more than a pair of nice ta ta s
I towed my old GTi with a two-wheel tow dolly once.
The car had no motor and no interior at the time, so it was pretty damn light.
But since the dolly had no suspension, the sonofabitch would pogo-stick off the expansion joints at every section of elevated freeway.
Given the generally shitty roads and the narrow lanes, the max safe speed was about 45 mph.
If you're going more than about 20 miles, get a four-wheel trailer. And even then, mind your speed as you tow.

Like the picture states.
UHaul fucked up my mom's car when they said all she needed was the two wheel drag rear wheel kind...from NY to AZ. Those are designed for short range. Needless to say, UHaul paid for all repairs to suspension, tires, brakes, all broken parts due to false information.
Get the kind where the car doesn't touch the road.

what kind of car are you towing?
Also, I used a two wheel dolly but the one I got was on leaf springs. I told them it was for long distance haul, they said they had sprung and unsprung two wheels. Something to look into. If the price isn't that big of a difference, the four wheel is very much worth it though.
