Sounds like how men feel about women.

That's pretty much it. I want one and i was like 8 or 9 when i found out I had cat allergies and honestly it was only 1 time. But I go over friends houses that have cats and I never have any allergic reactions when i'm over there.

I want a cat but i'm going to do what some suggested here, first being spending time with the cat i want at the place to see if i'm allergic to it, if so then i'll see what kind of reaction i have to it, if it's just sneezing and watery eyes then that's pretty mild and i'm sure claritin or something along that nature will help out.

ah ok - seems like that one idea about checking out a shelter to see if they have a kinda of return policy would be a good way to gauge how allergic you might be

Save-a-Pet adoption shelters allow you to handle a cat you're interested in adopting.

Sit. Play with the cat. Let it crawl all over you. If after a few hours you have no reactions, you're good to go.

Me = Not allergic to kittahs.

Drew = Heinously allergic to kittahs. It's an instant reaction.

If any place doesn't let you handle/socialize with the animal before you adopt it, avoid that place like the plague.

I'm similar to you, I had bad cat allergies when I was younger but they seem to have largely faded as I got older. I took a chance and lived with 2 cats (my old roomate's) for 2.5 years, and it went really well. If I rubbed my face in the cat's fur my eyes would bug me, but mostly it went fine.

Some ideas:
1)pick up some Claritin/Loratidine. This anti-histamine helped me out a lot the few times my allergies bother me, and it's available for cheap over the counter
2)rinse your hands after handling kitty. You don't even have to use soap, I found a quick rinse protected me if rubbed my eyes later.
3)keep kitty out of your bedroom until you're sure you won't react.
4)consider "renting" a friends cat for a week or two to see if your allergies flare up. There's a big difference between handling a cat for a few hours and having one stay in your place, where their hair, dander and salive will accumulate all over the place.

that's a biggie. I forgot to mention that. my wife takes a Loratidine every morning. It lasts 24 hours.

I'm mildly allergic, but I just ignore it. I also suck at keeping my house clean, that would honestly probably take care of it.

As for stuff you need to have, really just a shit box and some food. Whenever I'm introducing a cat to a new house, I always lock it in it's shit room (laundry room, generally) for the better part of a day or so before I let it out to explore the rest of the house. Let them establish a home base before they get all freaked out.

I might try this as well. My fiancee has a friend who just had kittens, maybe i can give that a try. I was looking at different types of cats on PetFinder.com and i'm really liking the tortoiseshell cats.

I liked this one http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/dis...petid=13318538 but it's currently pending an adoption, so i'm eyeing this one http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/dis...petid=13347633. I would like a cat but a kitten will work just as well.
