Cardio.

I'd be putting anywhere from 10 to 18 miles every other day.

I'd like something that has decent speed for beginner.

What would you say a decent MPH would be for a road bike?

And wouldn't a fixed gear be a disadvantage?

 

Decent speed depends on your lungs and legs If it is just for cardio, just find something you are comfortable on and has decent components. The problem with cheap components is that they dont perform as well...that may discourage you from riding. $400 is NOT going to get you a new bike that you will be happy with. 10-18 miles is a good hour+ each day. A bike you wont like...you wont ride. I suggest getting is used. Go to a shop and get fitted. Then check out their clearance stuff to see if you want to spend a lil more money now for a better bike. Then at the same time, with your measurements, go find used bikes.

I can max out like at 30mph on my road bike. That is like a 1 minute sprint on flat ground...maybe it was even a slight slight decline. On longer rides, 15+ miles...I probably do like 12-15mph...

 

Buy a cheap used bike and go out there and ride into the sunset.

 

Get a huffy. Its kinda like the Ford of bicycles.

My dad's been hit twice while on his road bike...and we don't live in a big city either.
