I'm leaning towards this mind set, unless someone else has a suggestion.

Is a possibility, but I don't want to step into a used bike that has been scuffed up on the road and isn't alligned for a crap. I'm reading about situations like this right now.

id go into a local bike shop and get measured and ask if they know of anyone selling a used rig in good condition.

that's what i did. my first real bike i got as a hand me down. rode it for nearly 3 years before I got my first new bike. Dave Scott Centurion Ironman edition. rode that for the next 5 years before i gave that away.

looked like this except 6speed and had standard handle bars

cheap bikes are great for building up stamina imo.

i've had some pretty bad crashes and unless they were hit by a car chances are it's a simple (maybe expensive) fix. such as replacing fork or wheel or getting the existing wheel trued. also it's easy to check if the frame is bent. just do a test ride and see how easy it is to keep your balance sitting up with your hands off the handle bars.

it wasn't originally, the owner converted to a single speed.
