Assignment Shoot #2
The d40 has pretty decent manual capabilities. Wish it had a second scroller though so you don't have to hold the function button and scroll for F-Stop
I just haven't figured out how to scroll to the different settings. The only setting I've managed to change was ISO.
In the M mode you can change F-Stop and Shutter. The camera defaults to change shutter with the scroller below the shutter button. To change the F-stop press/hold the button to the left fo the shutter button and rotate the scroller. The Function button on the left of the lens (on the body) you can program that to be whatever you want. Mine is either White balance or ISO.
Otherwise you have to hit the magnifying glass button (bottom left on the back) to switch settings on the display. You can change your photo quality, size, WB, ISO, Focus area, Auto focus, Metering, etc...
Do you not have the manual?

shoot shoot shoot and shoot more is the best investment for a camera. play around with the setting get to know your camera. pay attention to your histogram and understand if you do this, this the end result or if you do this you will get a different result.
