My dad needs a new putter, so I've been planning on putting a placeholder in his stocking so he can pick one out...

anyway, I was just wondering how much one of the fancy-go-get'em putters costs approx... I was thinking 300-400 but I could be way off and I might ask my mother for help if it's more like 500+

opinions and maybe models to look at?

a putter is a very personal choice, but should be NOWHERE near 400 dollars for a weekend golfer. Even a crazy Scotty Cameron is around 300 bucks. I rock a Ping putter (my scotty sits in my room) and it (ping) was about 180 bucks when I got it. I would say if your dad is really really good and wants something fitted etc that 300 bucks should be well inside the ballpark. IBdubby.

I would recommend Scotty Cameron or Ping putters...I have both and they are the only two I would ever play...Odyssey is ok, but I've never been a fan.

I just had no clue h:

anyway, he is a weekend golfer but takes it seriously...from the first day the first course within 20 miles opens to the first snow.

he'll also play in more than a few tournaments over the summer as well as the more than occasional "today feels like a golf day" outings every other week+... anywho I figured it'd help his short game as that is what's been killing his handicap

well, and dubby will prob. chime in, the putter doesn't make the man. I am wondering if there is a gap in his game that needs to be better filled if his "short game" is lacking. Putting is a huge part of the game, but chances are replacing the impliment is far from the cause if that makes sense. I would say 300-500 dollars in lessons is far more valuable than a 500 dollar putter.

Do you know what kind of putter he currently has? Like Lee said, a putter is a very personal choice. It has to fit his style of putting (stance and swing path), feel (hard or soft), and more importantly, fit his eye and be easy to look at. Some people like a traditional blade style, others like the big new monstrocities that have become popular the last few years.

Some good brands:
Odyssey ($140-300) - They make a lot of different style putters, some with a soft insert in the putter face. They have all styles, from blades, to mallets, to big uglies. One of the most popular is the 2ball, or 2ball blade. I've had the 2ball blade, loved it.

Yes! (~$150-225) - This is a relatively new (3 yrs maybe?) company, which has milled C grooves in the putter face that help get the ball rolling quicker instead of skidding on the grass. Very popular in Europe and on tour. They make all kinds of styles as well.

Ping (~150-200+) - Ping has been around for decades, and they started it all in the putting world. They have some of the most classic putter styles ever. They have some newer styled stuff as well.

Scotty Cameron ($300+) - This is the holy grail of putters. The most popular putter in the world, and on the PGA tour. Craftsmanship is 2nd to none. The basic blade styles are $299, and there are all kinds of custom options you can get that can double the price (requires sending the putter back to the putter shop). I have 2 scotty camerons, love them both.

So really $300 is the max you'll spend...you'll probably be in the $150-200ish range for something he likes.

I haven't played a round, but I've played around. o: We have some in the shop, I've putted on the practice green with them...they're pretty good. I prefer the softer feel of my Scotty though. The Yes! putters are definitely worth a try.

I heart the feel on my Ping B60 IsoForce, I can't find any other putter that has it's feel. I have been looking for a replacement for like 10 years but can't find one with the same feel. I want something a little heavier and a touch longer now that I have grown but even my scotty just doesn't feel as good to me as the ping :happysad:
