yes the hex insert, I wouldn't say soft, but not hard...its the weirdest putter feel I have ever felt as far as trying to explain it...well I take that back..the nubbins putter was the most fucked up feeling..it was like putting with the surface of a basketball h:

Lee you could try adding some lead tape to make it heavier. As for the shaft you'd probably have to reshaft it or could get extensions for it.

On the topic. I also have a Scotty and love it. Have thought about buying something else but I love the look and feel of the Cameron too much. You could get him a gift cert so he could find what he wants and you could buy it for him. Lessons might also be a good gift

Ya you're better off prolly. If its already taped then you just gotta keep looking. Putters are tough to find for me. I really have to like the look and feel of one which you dont come upon everyday. I've head my current putter for 5+ years
