Default Camera Crew - Recommend me a DSLR.

Going to get the woman one for Xmas. Not sure what I should go with.

I have been shopping for one for awhile, just haven't made a decision, yet.

Price range is $500-$1200ish, so I have a lot of options.

$1200 will get you a hell of a camera

She just needs a camera? Or is she into photography?

I would go entry with the XTi or D40 (Body only for either) and spend the monies on an 18-200 lens.

I would debate a little between the D40 and D80 (mainly due to focus motor in the body of the D80)

i kinda regret getting the D40... if you plan to upgrade, some lens cost more than the body itself... Plus the lens req. a built in motor.
spend a little more if you decide on a nikon and dont get the D40

I LOVE my D40. The light weight of it, and my lenses came with the camera so I didn't have an added cost.

oh dont get me wrong its a great camera, especially the packaged one with 2 lens. i think i spent about $800 for the body, 2 lens, 2 - 2 gig sd cards and a bag.
