Same here, I had an Inspiron that would intermittently turn itself off. It never stayed on longer than 30 minutes, even with the huge cooling rack I rigged up.

my 600m crapped out on me a few months back, but other than that, i've had no problems with Dell. The desktop I bought for my gf 6 years back is running strong.

you never considered replacing the heatsink & fan?

I replaced the heatsink, and both fans with OEM parts, which consequently voided my warranty.

I tried running it with no case on and the same thing happened. I think that particular model was just a bad design.

I have nothing against Dell though, their desktops have always worked fine for me. I'm using a hybrid HP/self built currently though.
