Default photography crew. v. random people

I'm looking for advice on how to take pictures of random people on the street. Say you see someone that would make for an interesting shot. How do you approach them and ask them to be the focus of your shot without coming off like a weirdo? Do you normally just spark up a brief conversation or just immediately ask them? I sometimes have a fear of "taking risks" when photographing in public, as I'm often afraid of what people will think. I hope this makes sense... :hs:

Great video.

But I am a photojournalist, so my life revolves around taking strangers pictures everyday and than letting them know that I took their picture and getting their name for the paper. I would say 95-percent of the time people are accepting. One other hard part, is I have to take pictures of children, which is really hard to do nowadays, but must be done.

Don't be a pussy. Make the image. If you are scared, approach them and tell them they inspire you and you'd like to a make an photograph of them. And if they "snuff" you or tell you to fuck off, what does it matter if you got the frame? You'll never see them again and you're on a public standing which isn't illegal.

I just raise the camera and shoot.

As long as you are not selling the photo in any fashion that violates public domain there is no issue at all including kids. If it is taken in public there is no reasonable expectation to privacy. Start poking through windows and you are in a whole other area of legality though.

Hence why it's bolded. Reading this board, it's a common mistake I hate reading.
