If he is too young to handle it by himself he is too young to handle it period. It's like letting the kid drive a car as long as you have a hand on the wheel. He's too small to handle it himself and you aren't in full control. It's just plain a bad idea.
we finally disagree on something
i see it quite differently
in relation to your car analogy, i dont see it as simply having a hand on the wheel. the adult has the pedals, the adult has the power of control with the steering wheel. the child simply has the image and perception of control. you control the speed, the momentum and if necessary you have instant ability to alter the childs decision process. it's funny how you point the car scenario because i learned around 10-11 years old by doing just that, sitting in my dads lap and driving down our driveway, through a lil wooded area and down my grandparents driveway, with my dad guiding my hands on the steering wheel ... much how i first started to shoot larger caliber firearms
much like if you handle the gun but allow the child to pull the trigger. he thinks he has the control, but in reality he is simply pressing a button or pulling a trigger. its the simplest way to introduce a child to young to have his own control. here though it was done completely wrong
never know the childs ready unless you take the steps to see that he understands what power he is handling
if he's pulling the trigger, he's in control of when it's fired. small arms are designed to be fired by one person at a time and that is it. attempting to have it operated by two people regardless of age or method creates an issue of control and thus an issue of safety. it is far better for the child to teach them patience and to acknowledge their limits than create and unnecessary safety hazard for a cheap thrill.
just because you didn't kill anyone doesn't mean it's a good idea.
and a 8 year old should learn how to fire a uzi because?? im all for proper training, but i dont think kids should be exposed to guns until the age of 12 or 13.
:dunno: I'm for gun training youth, but mind you, the way I was trained I think is best. I learned how to handle a gun with a bolt action .22 rifle under careful supervision in groups of 6 kids on a range. Children should not use automatic, or even semi-automatic training beyond safety and avoidance education until they're about 16, and even then it should be well controlled.
