I'm pretty sure in sane states you don't have to FFL at all at gun shows...

I could be wrong, never been to a gun show, and that's why i asked lol

Or maybe it's just private people at gun shows don't have to if they sell something.... i'm not sure.

they still have to call it in but a lot of them won't charge an ffl fee since you're buying from them.

Yes, except that i am exempt from background checks, as i have a concealed weapons permit.

So, is it a pretty good assumption that i could find a stripped lower at a gun show?

Private citizens can sell without an FFL as long as they are not doing it for profit but businesses must have an FFL regardless of venue. However, if you are buying from them they are not going to charge you a transfer fee. At least not that I've ever heard of.

How much did you want to spend?

I've shot the Kimber, and damn that is a hell of a pistol. I would love to own one. I read Wilson makes a nice one

Kimber is good but way overrated. Springfield is fine for the price. Rock Island is great on a budget. For a good 1911 under a grand take a look at the Sig GSR. I have not shot one but the one I fondled was really nice. They run about $900 around here. I think Smith has some nice ones in that price range as well.
