if you're not an audiophile, I doubt if you can decipher between a 300 system and a 1000 one. That being said, I own a 160 system
Oh, an average person can tell the difference between those. I'd say an average person can't tell the difference between a system that costs above 3K. The problem is that a lot of people assume that louder sounds better on some instinctive level, and crank up the volume enough that it overpowers on the ears. That's the problem with telling the difference between the systems.
That being said, I have a $500 system that's OK. The fidelity is good, but I find the surround's low mid lacking and the projection is a bit limited, so you really have to make sure the speakers are in the right spot.
I agree that systems below about $100 can be told apart. That being said, price does not equal quality. My sub $500 Yamaha setup sounds better that some more expensive ones.

True. The whole price=performance misconception is the only reason people by Sony sound systems any more IMO h:
ended up going with the def tech procinema 800 :x i liked the instore demo, but you're never quite sure until you hear them at home. receiver is on order now.
after this i think i have to let the CC nap.
