the money you put into it to maintain and fix stuff is a loss. what you can do is look for similar condition cars for sale in your area and take that to the insurance and say hey i need this much more.

I looked online a little bit last night at comparable cars. I'll go back and print some off I guess. :hs:

Are you saying to ask for $500 more than the comps to get down to the price I really want?

Yes. get an average for the true replacement cost of the vehicle with the comps. Add 500 or roughly 10% (in your case since the vehicle value is under 5k ) for negotiation. Keep in mind that replacement cost has to include registration fees, taxes and any inspection fees if applicable. if they give you 2k and it costs you 2 k to buy the car, you'd be shafted on anything beyond that.
Alright sounds good. So how close do the comps have to be? I mean, should I be looking for my exact model? Because I've found quite a few 5th gens but not necessarily '94's with 150k miles.

still looking. most of what I've found is being sold by dealerships...I don't think that's going to work. :hs:
it will work. because it that is what is available, then that is what is available. it's not your fault there aren't any or not as many private party sales
