setting up a small saltwater tank....
This is getting the gears turning... I'd love to try my hand at an aquarium again. Last time everybody ate eachother and died from overeating.

figured i'd post up pics of the 3 tanks......
1st pic is the 52 freshwater. it has (6) head & tail light tetras, (6) neon tetras, & (2) fancy-tail guppies. i plan on adding alot more of smaller schooling fish & maybe an angel or 2
next is the 14 gallon i bought when i moved. decided i wasn't gonna set the 52 back up(see how well that idea went) :loco: but still wanted a small tank for a few fish & the only fish that survived the 2 previous moves....the black moor. i have 3 options on this tank....
1) keep it setup w/ the black moor only
2) move the black moor to the 52 & eventually make this tankl a snake enclosure
3) trade the black moor in for other freshwater or saltwater fish from the local place near me & give the tank to a friend who has expressed interest in a small aquarium
lastly is the biocube8 saltwater. it is still in the beginning stages w/ the live sand & live rock, small snails (which can be seen on the glass), small crabs ( which can be seen on the sand) & pair of small percula clownfish.
next, i'm gonna get some more live rock for a base & in a few months, start adding some corals

Hate to break it to you, but those snails will not last very long. Small tank, not enough algae for one snail let alone two. Good luck though.
And the crabs, same thing. Sooner or later you're going to end up with one. They'll fight each other and the snails.
Just get more live rocks and you're set.

the live rock already had alot of small amobeas growing on it & also all over the glass from the 3 weeks it's been up & running, so the guy at the local saltwater place who has only been doing this 30 or so years told me to get the quantity of what i've got & to set the day & night lights on timer cycles of 9hrs on the day light & 13hrs on the night & that should cause the algae to flourish enough for all the "cleaner crew" to have plenty to feed on & further cycle the tank...i've also started a once a day feeding of flake food for the clowns

if this is what you see on the rocks, KILL IT NOW!!! they don't go away and are really, really, really annoying to get rid of, if you can.
:dunno:
they really don't show up too well in the pics, but there are on the glass & i can see them on the rock...circled the ones that showed up in the pics. the more i look & think, the more i think they might be snails w/out shells

in anticipation of starting some corals in the next month or so, i decided to add more live rock for the base.....this necessitated re-vamping the original 3 live rock setup
:crazyr:
so i bought 3 more pieces for a total of 6 pices of live rock. there is about 12-15lbs of live rock now. 2 of the 3 new pieces were covered w/ vegetation & i put them in the back. pretty much the entire bottow of the tank is now covered in live rock & should make for a nice base for coral....once the tank has cycled for a few weeks (also have to wait for my bank account to "cycle" as well LOL)
those thinking about doing a tank....be forewarned that it is an EXPENSIVE habit :madr:
Expenditures so far:
tank - 45.00 (clearance sale from regular $150-200)
5lb bag of live sand - 15.00
12-15lbs of live rock @ 10.00/lb
10 gallons of pre-cured saltwater @ 1.25/gallon
2 snails & 3 small crabs - ~25.00 (i think)
1 mated pair percula clownfish - 35.00
powerstrip w/ built-in timer & seperate day & night plugs - 25.00 (way
)
that doesn't include the test kits & chemicals i had previously....not to mention the 6 or so weeks of "time" setting up everything & testing it pretty much 2-3 times a week
new live rock base pics below.....
