Hiring employees.
So, this is for those of you that own your own biz or have participated in hiring employees. What has your experience been like? I'm about to hire my first one and am 110% stressed out over it. Any of your own experiences would be greatly appreciated
I hired and fired employees when I was working in the hotel industry. I was the Chief Engineer of several hotels and I didn't stress out on hiring people. Prepare a list of questions that you can draw from. I required a resume which would outline their skills and during the interview process I would ask open ended questions to see how they would handle different situations, no yes/no questions. Service oriented people need to be able to adapt to changing situations so there aren't any pat answers. You should know what you feel would make a good employee, think back to how you were interviewed, figure out what you felt were good questions/approaches, and what was bad and didn't relate. Technical abilities that are necessary to the job should be tested don't be subtle, you need to know if they know what is going on.

We have already interviewed a few people and have chosen someone. I got to do the always fun reference checks today. I think its the commitment I'm uneasy with. Our biz is still new, so if I do something wrong it falls back on me, so to speak.
And yeah, people who apply for laborers in the construction industry are.. interesting.

Hiring people is easy...it's the firing that is stressful. It's weird interviewing people that are older than you.

It's illegal to not hire someone because he is gay.
