Default headphone noise

Lately I've noticed a funny "wind" or roaring noise in my music when I listen to itunes or ipod. Almost like I am listening to headphones under water. It doesn't ruin the song but it is noticible enough to annoy me and cause my eyes to water in quieter songs.
Does anyone know what causes this and how I can stop it?

And you're sure you've isolated the noise to the headphones... and not the device you're listening to?

If it's a white noise kind of sound - like when the TV goes out and all you've got is static - I'd say it's a dying connection between the headphone wire and the jack.

If so, then it's time to upgrade.

i first noticed the noise on a video that i got from a questionable source so I blamed it on that. I was watching that on my nano. Then I started hearing it on the music on my laptop itunes. I got the music from two CDs, one older and one new. Two different sets of headphones. The only thing in common, I think, was itunes...am I missing some setting?

it may be the headphones

it may be bad EQ settings in itunes

it may be a low quality conversion from a CD

it may be all in your head.

Could be software, but I doubt it. Run Software Update to see if you're current within iTunes. Hopefully, it isn't the headphone jack on either your nano or the laptop.

Test each pair of headphones on the same track (either CD rip or very high bitrate MP3) with the laptop, after you've checked for updates.

While the track is playing, wiggle the headphone cord at the end nearest the jack. If the static noise gets worse, then it's the headphones that are the culprit.

Have you giggled the headphone plug while listening to music?

I had my ipod plugged into my head unit via front aux port, well, a lady cut me off really bad the other day. I threw my right arm out to block my little one from leaning forward incase of a collison, my hand hit the cable @ the jack and the sound coming from ipod sounds like the noise you're describing. I'm thinking it might be trauma to the headphone jack?

Good to see you
