Agreed...if it's not detonation, either spun bearing causing rod knock or the piston to hit the head, or could be piston slap caused by out of round/spec cylinder bore or piston. Gonna be some $ to fix.

My old roommate actually spun a bearing and didn't have rod knock...but the piston was hitting the head. The "IN" stamp on the piston was pressed into the bottom of the head. We thought it was rod knock until we pulled it apart. o:

if its bearing, cant I just replace it from bottom? removing oil pan?

With the GSR?? Yes. Drop the pan, the pickup and you can get to the bearing caps from there

Assuming there was no scoring to the crankshaft, yes it can be fixed with the motor in the car.

Rod bearings/main bearings get intechanged all the time, but can mean the same thing.

Drop the pan, unblot the rods and look for scoring on the caps... if there is, I'd just pull the motor and rebuild.

The motor comes out super fast. You could get it out and broken down in one day and back together in another weekend.
