which is a lot more work. but i never said what i suggested was his only option just the easiest/cheapest

This is actually the route I am going to end up going.
It may cost a little more but I can make my own design really and continue it throughout the house adding much more value than I spend and it looks a lot nicer than that generic stuff you purchase by the foot.

Putting a border around the edges isn't that difficult, all you need is a good miter saw. The ends where it's (the border) perpendicular to the grain is a pain in the ass cutting all the little pieces of the rest of the floor that have to fit in.
