I watched Shrek 3 in HD over the Holiday. It's so pretty.

I passed by Fry's to take a look at their TV's over the weekend. The demo being played was Ice Age 2 on a standard DVD. It looked washed out and dull.

I'm a high def disc snob now. :wtc:

I have mixed emotions about my existing DVD collection.

There are some titles you really don't need the HD for (Toy Story 1 & 2) ... there are some that would be really nice (Matrix Trilogy, Cars, Wild Things h.

I have a feeling that every movie purchased from this point on will be in an HD format. :doh2:

I hate the fact I can get the damn movie for $15 ... but will end up forking out $25 to $30 because I'll always question the "what if" quality difference.

Why not get an upconverting player as well to help a little bit with yourolder formats?

This Toshiba is branded as an upconverting player too.

I need to do more research on exactly what upconverting is though.

My mentality, it's like taking an audio tape and putting it on CD. It's not CD quality ... but it's in the right format.

It probably just pumps the signal higher and causes more noise to the image...

this weekend, i actually took photographs of Top Gun in DVD 480p, DVD 1080i Upconvert and HD-DVD 1080i, you can see the huge images here:

here are some 100% crops though:
DVD 480P:

DVD 1080i Upconvert:

HD-DVD 1080i:

... not a huge difference between the 480p and the upconverted, but way more detail in the device on the wall and the hat in the HD-DVD
