i just started working for a new company, where, in my 401K, they'll match 50% of they money i put into it, up to 6% of my salary.

Is that good, normal or what?

It's as good as some not as good as others...

A word of advice, put in all that you can. It's easier to learn to get by without it in your hands, you will learn to do without that extra, even if they don't match beyond the 6%.
