I think your system needs to be registered (via mail-in) card before the warranty kicks in. You could ...

1. Bring the console back to the store, see what they can do.
2. Register the card and wait
3. Buy the Xbox Live messenger kit, it comes with a free wired mic.
4. Buy a wireless mic upgrade.

Thanks. I will call on my lunch break. I didn't realize I had to mail in my registration. I figured it was registered once I set up xbox live.
