I changed out my 82 gallon water heater that was 25 years old at the very least. I was in the hotel industry and home remodeling, never heard about having to change out water heaters every 7 years. Most of them come with a 10 year warrantee the one I have that replaced my 82 gallon one has a 12 year warrantee.

they dont make water heaters like that anymore

anyway... after reading online.. it seems like our whole house water softening system can bring upon premature death of the water heater

thats for salt systems, ours is potassium chloride.. so not sure

you shut off the circuit breaker also, right? (i know its a stupid question, but i had to ask for your safety)
