Well my buddy in HS got a scholarship to West Point...last i talked to him he was jumpin out of helicopters in South Korea and shootin rocket launchers and shit, he said he was in command of a group of people.
Brainy don't mean shit you go in as a grunt and you prove you are able to follow orders and make critical decisions under pressure when it counts. You will gain rank as you go and some gain faster than others.
If you brown nose you will be a private your whole life, but if you do your job and report as directed and excel in certain areas the right people will take note.
Also take any and all training that is offered even if you think you will never need it, the more jobs you can do the more valuable you are to your commander and therefore more likely to rank up faster.

Most who attend those schools and end up in command with no actual combat duty or time in rank under their belt get respect only on the field out of necessity from their company.
Now in the rare event (like your buddy) one comes along and issues no job they themselves are not willing to do they gain the full respect of their company.
Too many times these West Point pricks hit formation demanding instant respect from their troops, what they weren't taught was that their troops would just as quickly shoot them in the back as listen to them until they prove they are worthy of being followed into death.
Obviously your buddy is one of the better ones to graduate and has earned true respect from his company.

EDIT: I'll assume anywhere from 6 - 12 years in the service.
keep in mind, when you get promotions you also get an increase in pay, and responsibility. it's not much but every little bit counts. im going in as an E2, private first class for you civies
, so i'll be making a little more than regular privates after boot camp.
