Default TV/Electronics Crew: Upconverting DVD?

While I wait for the BluRay/HD-DVD shit to get settled, and come down in price, I'm looking at an upconverting DVD player. My current DVD player is just 480, and doesn't upconvert. It does however have component outputs. Is a digitally upconverting (to 1080p) DVD player going to be worth it? I'm looking at a Samsung that got good reviews, and has both component/HDMI outputs.

Some say that it's close to BluRay/HD-DVD quality.

Thoughts/opinions?

Also, my home-theater-in-a-box setup that I will (probably) be taking with me when I move out has a DVD player on it, and only one audio input. Would it be ok to just use RCA splitters to attach the TV and separate DVD player inputs into that one receiver input? I may just get new stuff though, we'll see.

Anybody? I keep finding conflicting info...or opinions...about whether or not it's worth it, or the picture gets better.

I'm not asking for what to buy, I'm asking if there's really a noticeable difference that's worth buying one. I like the OPPO units, but I don't know if I want to spend over $200 on one in case the BluRay/HD's drop in price in the not too distant future.

I've just noticed that the 480 resolution of my DVD player isn't nearly as good as the 720/1080 of HDTV...and it irritates me. h:

Yes, its a good deal of difference. But, just about every upconverting DVD player requires the use of HDMI to pass the quasi-HD signal. Component will, generally, only pass 480p on most of the players although is just as capable as HDMI in handling the signal.

Then again, I was denied from the HDTV crew so what do I know?:hsdunno:

some players do support 720p/1080i over component.

HDMI is not a problem, I have 2 inputs on the tv.

:ts:

I'll have to see if they have any of the players hooked up so I can see the difference.
