Default TV/Electronics Crew: Upconverting DVD?

While I wait for the BluRay/HD-DVD shit to get settled, and come down in price, I'm looking at an upconverting DVD player. My current DVD player is just 480, and doesn't upconvert. It does however have component outputs. Is a digitally upconverting (to 1080p) DVD player going to be worth it? I'm looking at a Samsung that got good reviews, and has both component/HDMI outputs.

Some say that it's close to BluRay/HD-DVD quality.

Thoughts/opinions?

Also, my home-theater-in-a-box setup that I will (probably) be taking with me when I move out has a DVD player on it, and only one audio input. Would it be ok to just use RCA splitters to attach the TV and separate DVD player inputs into that one receiver input? I may just get new stuff though, we'll see.
