France Italy and libanon are some that i know that HAD mandatory service. Abolished it like 10 years ago but the numbers are still inflated because of it.
I think the US should institute a mandatory boot-camp for all HS Graduates or all dropouts. At the very least it might make something good out of a troubled youth, at the worse it would allow the average citizen to have compassion for the soldiers and what they go thru to be who they are. Would it really be a horrible thing to teach every citizen basic combat training?
But then we wouldn't have the best military in the world. The only reason we do is because it's a volunteer system and only the people that actually want to be in it are there. If we had a bunch of unmotivated, immature punks serving our country, we'd probably not be so tough.
