Its really hard to avoid them when getting loans as many schools primarily use them. Just make sure you get federal loans whenever possible, then you'll have many options for cheap consolidation afterwards.

you can consolidate subsidized loans as well as non-subsidized loans. You just cant consolidate them together. You'd end up having two loan payments i.e. myself
