Thanks for the responses. I'm going to look into GIMP, read a lot of the stuff that they provide and it looks like a really good program for free. It looks like I will be going with Adobe of one sort or another, depends on the deal I can get through my wife at UofM. The woman I bought the camera from uses an MS product, MS Image Pro 7? The software that came with the camera does a good job it's just not really intuitive.
Gimp is very limited and frusterating compared to running photoshop which is why very few people use it.

I'd say that's true to someone who's either a) a diehard photoshop fan even if they don't use it much or b) someone that always uses or only ever got the chance to use nothing but photoshop.
I used to use photoshop in HS and did lots of scanning and image editing... got out of it for a couple years after that and then found The GIMP. I haven't run photoshop since.
Sure it doesn't have everything that photoshop does, and it's not for everyone. But it sure has a hell of a lot more options than most people will ever use.
I just started running GIMP 2 but as I'm not used to photo editing software with so many options, I'm struggling a little bit. I don't really get this whole layer thing... :hs:

layering is the basis of most if not all visual editing programs
