venting
Everyone I'm talking to says the head needs to come off. Don't get me wrong, if the head has to come off anyway, I won't buy one until I know the thread can't be fixed. I'm going to see if I can get my friend to come look and see if it can be done with the head on the car. obviously it depends on how bad the thread is.

Did a giant glob of aluminum come off with the plug?
If so, I can see the case for a new head or removing the stock one to repair it. But if it's just enough to fill the threads on the plug, I'd bet you can install the helicoil without the hassle of yanking the head.

They're driven in with an ailgnment jig and a specific tool, then the top coil of wire is snipped, leaving the hardened steel coils acting as threads.
When the coil was installed on my last car, we rotated the crank over to TDC on that particular cylinder, drove in the coil and then drew a vacuum on an air compressor fitting threaded into the newly driven coil. Only a fine silvery dust came out, so that last step was probably overkill.
Since I was replacing the plugs as a set, anyway... I just smeared new anti-sieze compound and installed the new plugs.
Fired up fine, with no loss in power. Continued to run like a champ until I got in over my head with a half-assed wet fogger nitrous setup and ventilated the side of the block.

i was just linked to a 4 page thread on stangnet talking about people who have had the same problem. i saw a post from a guy in my area that i know from a local board saying his mechanic can fix it for $300. we'll see what happens.
And apparently timesert > helicoil. www.timesert.com
http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=607458
If that doesn't work out, Summit sells factory PI heads complete for 400.

Paint looks kinda whack.......... or maybe it's the camera
Hmmm... more edit... check this:
You are looking at a 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS with 145k highway mile on the body but only has 40k on the rebuild motor. The transmission along with the clutch/ flywheel, short shifter and the rear differential was changed when the rebuild motor was put back in the car. The transmission and rear differential was off a 2004 USDM WRX. Clutch and flywheel is a exedy clutch. There is a AEM short ram intake on the car along with a unorthodox pulley and a throttle spacer to increase gas mileage and better acceleration. The exterior color right now is currently flat black with a black cloth interior. Car will need a full paint job for the car to be perfect. Aside from that it's has no major dents or any frame damage. Since the car is all wheel drive, it's ready for any type of weather that comes at it. Perfect car for the winter. Car runs with no problems, and the clutch is grabbing with no problems at all. Car has a clean title with no accident records. Can arrange for shipping if necessary, car is completely stock. :eh:
