Default computer people- lagging PC..

okay, so the 'system' process seems to be the culprit. no, not the system idle process, the system process.

running

IE
itunes
AIM
utorrent
NOD32

2.53 P4
1.5gb ram

any ideas?

itunes, utorrent and IE can take up a lot, depending on what you're doing and how long they've been open.
What is NOD32?

Have you scanned your system recently? Some viruses will show 99% utilization this way. I would start there.

maybe once every few mins, IE or AIM will lock up and i'll get an hourglass for 30-45 seconds and the title bar will say it's not responding. then it comes back and all is normal for a few more mins... and so on.

It sounds more of a memory problem than a disk problem.

Try running a memory optimizer. It will clean out your memory of things that are not being used anymore or threads that got caught.
