This drive reportedly takes 650 milliAmps to power it and most USB ports provide only 500 milliAmps max. Upon connection the drive generates the error message "Power Surge On Hub Port". This is a known issue with this particular drive and they have a power booster cable for sale on Western Digital's web site to address it (allows the drive to plug into 2 ports - out of stock everywhere I looked, not even listed on newegg). This was not in any reviews here nor in any other place I researched the drive but if you search for the error message you'll see it's not uncommon. Make sure you USB ports can support it before you purchase.

Then it's a laptop problem not conforming to the USB standards. There are some that use 2 USB ports and cables for them are a dime a dozen.

I liked those Passport drives as well.

Or built my own.

does size matter on the HDD?

the WD MyBook line is terrific if you don't mind the extra weight. (ext powered too)

They all need to be portable, looking at 2 60 or 80gb and 1 120gb.
