 my thinkpad powers the maxtor and WD ones just fine
This drive reportedly takes 650 milliAmps to power it and most USB ports provide only 500 milliAmps max. Upon connection the drive generates the error message "Power Surge On Hub Port". This is a known issue with this particular drive and they have a power booster cable for sale on Western Digital's web site to address it (allows the drive to plug into 2 ports - out of stock everywhere I looked, not even listed on newegg). This was not in any reviews here nor in any other place I researched the drive but if you search for the error message you'll see it's not uncommon. Make sure you USB ports can support it before you purchase.
