So the approach to SF or LA will be limited to a reasonable speed.. say 60 mph.

But for the majority of the run, they will lay have to lay new track down the central valley... so figure on 300+ miles of high-speed rail with a top speed around 150mph.

To put it all in perspective, a road trip from LA to SF takes about 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic. A commuter flight takes about 3 hours if you count time to / from the airport plus all the security BS.

If high-speed rail can get the job done in half the time of driving for half the price of a plane ticket, I'm there. Doubly so if they can carry autos. h:
60? the damn BART trains run at 70-75mph.

If they can cut the time down to a little over 2hrs I might be game but I doubt it... or by the time they are done, I'll have my own light plane and i'll fly myself to the little airport next to danville.

also 5-6hrs from SF to LA? you must drive slow :chuckles:

Do the BART trains have to deal with grade-level crossings for vehicle traffic? No. CalTrain is a better comparison IMO; they run at about 55mph.

A trip average of 180mph is doable if you've got a dedicated rail network
separated from all grade-level crossings. It's all a matter of money. h:

And who said we were talking about my drive time? hfawk:

I'm talking average drivers... 80mph± with a long stop for gas and grub.

No BART trains do stop much more often and CalTrain also go up to speeds of 70mph. Inner city they don't go over 60mph.

weaksauce. i knew you were one of them stoppers. I don't stop when I drive up or down from LA/SF saves me easily 30-45mins.
