Default converting laptop to linux

i have an old IBM thinkpad laptop, the model is 390e

it has like 128mb ram, 3.2 gig hard drive (i happen to have spare hard drive, too...)

its a dog slow 98 machine that i dont really even use anymore but was wondering if it would be worth my while to convert to linux for basic computing stuff, email browsing etc...

it has seen better days, the hinges are weak and the batteries are shot but i could hook it up to a monitor and use a different monitor, mouse, keyboard.... so basicly the only use i would expect from it would be to handle the computing aspects...

I'd add some more ram and get a slightly bigger hard drive.

I'd put Xubuntu on it. It's lightweight and faster, made more for older machines that can't do all the fancy graphics and shiz.

I would just toss a Redhat on it or Ubuntu which seems to be getting great reviews from everyone I know.

Linux will make that thing sing even as old as it is.

My girlfriend has an ancient laptop with a P133, 32mb RAM, and a 3.2 gig harddrive. I couldn't even get Ubuntu to install. The minimum requirements list 128mb RAM.

check out slackware, not hard to install and the minimum system requirements are tiny. I installed 9.1 a while ago with no problems.

http://www.slackware.com/install/sysreq.php
Slackware Linux doesn't require an extremely powerful system to run (though having one is quite nice . It will run on systems as far back as the 486. Below is a list of minimum system requirements needed to install and run Slackware.

* 486 processor
* 16MB RAM (32MB suggested)
* 100-500 megabytes of hard disk space for a minimal and around 3.5GB for full install
* 3.5" floppy drive

Additional hardware may be needed if you want to run the X Window System at a usable speed or if you want network capabilities.
