you sound like my dad used to be before he retired. he ran a whole plant all by himself. on call 24x7x365. and he couldnt even take vacation unless this other guy was free to take his place those days.

i used to feel that way when i was in operations. but since i've been in engineering i dont feel as stressed. i go home and dont really worry about work unless we've been having problems earlier in the day or i know some upgrades are happening that day. and since we have a pretty decent sized group, the workload can be spread between all of us, so it works out pretty well.

so as somebody else stated, i dont think it's an IT problem...you probably just need to find another company to work for...preferably one with a larger IT staff

That could be just as bad if not worse. They could pile a ton of work on you not knowing that its too much work for just one person.

most companies have more than one IT person. and the person giving you work would be an IT manager, and they normally know how much work something is going to be.

...unless he still wants to be supervisor/manager position. then things come down from above.

Our IT dept is about 45 or so strong and their work is spread among their groups. I've brought up hiring additional help and we will be back filling my old coworkers role soon. That person will be my peer, and I'll be the Senior so they will report to me. Even with him, the work load is still too much. We've already accounted for all the additional head count possible for this year, so I'll have to wait for additional help.

(Seriously though, I am. Not sure what kind of IT jobs we have though, that's a different department. They're always talking about Oracle and Peoplesoft and JD Edwards and crap like that.)
