Default Computer Memory Issues...help

So I reformatted my computer a few days ago and have slowly started to reinstall shit. I am having some memory and severe lag issues.

If I am just cruising around on my HDD's explorer.exe will spike and stay at like 50% of usage. Then if I am using Firefox it will eat ALL my memory and after awhile it will be using up to 80megs of memory and 80% of usage. I did the about:config integer that is suppose to only keep it at 16mb, but what else could I do?

Memory problems needing a fixing.
