The Saturn was sweeeeeeet. Because of the buttersoft controller, it made playnig US Capcom games a joy.

Saturn SF Alpha 2 > PSX SF Alpha 2 for that reason alone.

Now playing JDM Capcom games required a "Ram Pack". These would plug into the memory expansion port (looked like a game cart slot) in the top of the machine.

at first a 1MB unit was released for Marvel: Super Heroes. Then Sega had version control issues of the RAM ... some worked with some games, others not. They then released a 4GB ram cart which magnified the issue.

3rd party carts had a smart switch which detected what RAM (1, 4, game mfg) was needed.

If you got yourself straight with the RAM, game on. Back in 1998, playing an Arcade PERFECT version of Street Fighter Zero (jdm's Alpha) 3 w. 4mb pack was AWESOME.

By today's standards, an Xbox 1 or PS2 could do the same thing without the tricks though. :hs:

The true JOY of the Saturn comes with the odd-ball, rare titles. Some titles were so rare (due to low console sales, they didn't need to make many) that prices have sky rocketed on eBay.

Guardian Heroes

Dragon Force

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Shining Force III

Castlevania Dracula X (japan)

To this date, these games are arguably the BEST within their genres.

The Saturn was a strange machine. Its best games were released months before the Dreamcast landed. Panzer Dragoon Saga was the LAST title published.

Because Sega was so focused on a DC launch and launch titles, PDS few completely under the radar. You'd read about it in magazines and it would have a HIGH review, but it was buried between 50 PSX, 10 N64, and 100's of GB titles.

The hardcore owners would preorder the game past production runs. 6,000 in batch 1, 6,000 all presold in May of 1999.

The next batch (either 15 or 18K) didn't arrive until August of 1999.

and that's all she wrote.

This game is the MOST insane Bomberman ever made.
http://cgi.ebay.com/SATURN-BOMBERMAN...QQcmdZViewItem

a multi-tap would allow up to 6 players ... PER CONTROLLER PORT.

Saturn Bomberman allowed for 12 players on a game grid at least 200 by 200. It was sprawling.

If you're any bit a Bomberman fan, this game is the best ever made, hands down. It looked like the SNES version on roids, and had a plethora of powerups.

To me, it's the "perfect" version of Bomberman.

The SNES had:
Super Bomberman
Super Bomberman 2
Super Bomberman 3 (up to 5 players now)
Super Bomberman 4
Super Bomberman 5

The Genesis had:
Mega Bomberman (introduced dinosaurs)

The Saturn version was all of these, wrapped into one, smoothed out, and was given roids.

The later versions (N64, PSX, etc) all tried to screw with the simplistic, cartoon graphics. When the 3d platform rage kicked in, the franchise was doomed.

It's 11 years old and is the best of it's genre. Saturn Bomberman gets a 10/10 from me.
