How high are your various volume settings when you unmute the mic?

I had a similar problem with my IBM laptop. Turn down your mic volume when your speaker volume is up, that should fix it. Or, just mute the mic whenever you're not using it.

indeed it does, im leaving in a half hour to return it to BBY. We'll see what happens.

What are the odds that a tech is either gonna: 1) tell me the same thing you did. or 2) offer to have it sent out and fixed? And will I have to take those options?

They took the return after I repeatedly explained I didnt want it sent away for servicing.

I looked at the Vista laptops (HP's) .. NICE.

when you unmute the mic, anything said into the mic will come out the speakers. When you place a mic too close to the speakers it is outputting to, you get feedback. Adjusting the volumes "may" have fixed the issue, but really, (if the mic was built in) sony placed the mic too close to the speakers... also taking the 20 db boost off of the mic may have fixed the problem as well. I'm a fan of Toshiba laptops these days, they seem to work excellent...except all the pre-loaded software crap they have.

no fucking shit.

the mic is always supposed to be muted, or else youre going to get a high pitched squeal.. which is feedback from the speakers to the mic.
