Google, Amazon, and Yahoo have all tried auctions. None of them have come close to beating eBay at what it does.

PayPal and Google Checkout are two very different products. eBay banned it because they are a competitor, not because they were getting "raped."

Craigslist doesn't have fees but their format sucks and they don't get nearly as much exposure.
i believe it can be done. all you need is something better. google popped out of nowhere and became what it is today with a strong following because it was something better.

i made the migration from yahoo to google. i can certainly make the migration from ebay to 'gbay'

Just because it didn't succeed didn't mean it wasn't better. IE: betamax vs vhs. Also, if they're two very different products, how are they competing?

not saying it wasnt a better product - what made eBay succeed was the community base. adoption didnt take off for the other auction sites.

two different products: google checkout is for checkout - it doesn't also allow person to person payments.

Well thats simply a first to the market problem. Claiming all other competitors tried and failed is kind of misleading to me I guess. The only advantage ebay had was that they were first.

Great, I have a ton of old computer junk I need to get rid of and sell, was going to put it on ebay, but at this rate it's not going to be worthwhile, any money I make would go right back to ebay.

ebay was such a great idea, and they keep fucking around with it and its just sucking more and more. It's not worth it.

There were others before ebay. Ebay just did a lot of things right, at the right time.

IMO thought they are going a lot of bad things now and really fucking over the buyers. ebay lost the "internet auction" idea a long time ago.

i usually wait for people to email me and i sell my stuff outside of ebay to avoid ebay and paypal fees......

Once someone accepts I close auction and am not charged.
Of course im an honest ebay'r so im sure not everyone will feel comfortable doing that.
