Just because it didn't succeed didn't mean it wasn't better. IE: betamax vs vhs. Also, if they're two very different products, how are they competing?
not saying it wasnt a better product - what made eBay succeed was the community base. adoption didnt take off for the other auction sites.
two different products: google checkout is for checkout - it doesn't also allow person to person payments.
