OK time to upgrade the 10 year old tv I have currently

I am a simple guy and want to keep my options open to a few things.

Projector is out for now

So what I need to be able to do is:

Have HD capable tv but still get a decent quality image from normal cable and dvds.

I am looking at plasmas right now but is my expectation even realistic, because the image I have seen so far is shit on normal signal.

well it's going to cost money to do what you want it to do. easiest way is to get a tv that will upconvert the signal to 1080p or 1080i

but you get used to the "crappy" image from normal cable, dvds look fine (at least to my eyes, when using component output from the dvd)

so the real question is how much do you want to spend?

if you have a progressive scan or upconverting DVD player, the picture will look great (if you don't have one, they're pretty inexpensive nowadays, anyway).

You didn't give us a budget. I <3 my LG, but it was almost $2K.

OK I went and looked and found one i am going to be getting.

Did my own research and decided on the HP 50" plasma which I can pick up for $1200 right now with a $200 rebate on it.

So one grand gets me out the door....just have to make sure it is in my budget tomorrow h:

That is outdated info you have

Burn in isn't much of an issue on them anymore. Just to be safe though I will run an action movie dvd on loop for the first few days and it will be fine.
