Default comcast+DVR question

i know comcast leases a DVR for like 10$, but i was wondering, since they wouldn't have to supply any addition service (I already have digital cable) could I get one elsewhere (ebay) and hook it up and have it work? I know I would need something programed or have the cable card transfered to the new box. Do those use the removable cable card or is it something internal?

wont work, at least a buddy who tried it, it wouldnt. it's 10 bucks a month, stop being a jew...if you want DVR you want it...if you cant afford 10 bucks a month, I wouldnt be too worried about DVR.

or like mentioned below...which I didnt even think about...get a TiVO

you can buy a standalone TIVO

i have a directv/tivo combo unit that has dual tuners so i can watch one channel & record another at the same time, or record 2 at the same time & watch a previously recorded show while both are recording. the older standalones didn't have the dual tuners, but i think they might now....

http://www.weaknees.com/ has about the best prices out there & also has "hacked" ones w/ mad extended record times....mine is hacked by me to a record time of ~149hrs, so i can keep lots of pay-per-views & such to watch over again.

you can also hook them up your network & copy the programs to your pc to burn on dvd or they have some units w/ the dvd burner built-in.

tivo is the greatest thing in the world

I believe you can buy your own, it just has to be setup in their system with id codes. Here they use the Explorer 8000HD and it's a complete piece of crap, no HDMI, the search feature is weak, DVR programming screws up sometimes, I've had mine replaced and would call again but I'm sure it'll be more of the same. Brighthouse in FL was wayyyy better.

but with tivo im still paying 13 dollars a month. I know its better hardware but i don't care that much. I guess I really just am unsure about how the cable card stuff works.

99% of cable companies dont let you use your own box.

over here in NJ they use the 8300 and 8300HD for dvr.
